An AI-Powered Staircase Configurator – and 40 Steps of Autodesk History

Every iLogic rule and every relationship in this spiral staircase configurator was built by AI through Inventor AI. Then AI extended the design with new bar styles, and went beyond the rules: every step unique, each one a product from Autodesk's history.

You Asked; We Delivered…

In my last post I showed how we built an AI-powered configurator for a spiral staircase. Here’s what happened next…

What “AI-Powered” Means Here

‘AI-powered’ means something very specific here.

Every iLogic rule, every relationship between the components and many of the features in the model were created by AI through Inventor AI, our own MCP server for Autodesk Inventor. The result behaves like a traditional iLogic configurator: change a parameter, the rules run and the staircase redesigns itself.

In the process of developing the configurator, I asked AI to improve it. “Make the vertical bars more interesting and add the new styles to the configurator as part of the update. Twisted, wrought, spiral, wave.” This is AI extending an existing design; not just drawing a new one!

Beyond the Rules

But the rules aren’t the interesting part. What we did after the rules ran is…

The deterministic logic changed the sizes and the number of steps. Then, we asked AI for something no rule prescribes: make every single step unique.

Colour gradients and rainbows – a rule can do that….but one-of-a-kind, step by step?

A Walk Through Autodesk History

I’ve spent the last week following Autodesk University sessions. AU reminded me just how many products Autodesk has built or acquired over the years. I’ve honestly lost count…

As a tribute, we turned the staircase into a walk through that history. The AI researched Autodesk’s product timeline and gave each step a product…

We know – it’s wild! Enjoy!
